Textile as Text: Mapping Culture through Motifs
Sainico Ningthoujam is a doctoral candidate at McGill University and an FRQSC Fellow and Tomlinson Scholar. Her research examines contemporary literary representations of the East Himalayan region, with a focus on contested negotiations of Indigeneity in Asia.
This talk expanded on her Sahapedia–UNESCO project, in which she explores the significance of the phanek as a site for tracing cultural heritage. The lecture focused on a methodology that combines literary studies, visual arts, and material culture to examine the dynamic construction of traditions that both conform to and subvert social expectations.
