Lecture Title:
Historical Sound Change in Meiteiron: From Early Texts to the Present
Moderator: Maisnam Arnapal
Josiah Medin is a PhD candidate in the Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin interested in the historical development of Tibeto-Burman languages. His PhD research combines descriptive linguistics, historical phonology, palaeography, and textual criticism to describe and translate manuscript texts from pre-colonial Manipur, Northeast India. His dissertation will constitute a comprehensive descriptive and historical grammar of Old Meiteilon.
This presentation examines the historical sound changes in Meiteilon from its earliest attested texts to its modern standard form. By applying the methodology of comparative historical linguistics to attested forms in Old Meitei texts, he will trace major phonological developments and identify key patterns of change in the history of the language. Some attention will also be given to uncertainties and features with limited or conflicting evidence, with the goal of highlighting open questions and potential directions for further research into the language’s diachronic development.
