Biographical Overview:

Karam Monomohan Singh (1922–2009), popularly known as Amumacha, was a pioneering figure in Manipuri cinema, entrepreneurship, and public life. He was the producer of the first Manipuri feature film, Matamgi Manipur (1972), and several landmark documentaries, including Maipak – Son of Manipur (1971), First Statehood Day Celebration (1972), and Umanggi Mee (dubbed film). His contributions laid the foundation for the development of Manipuri cinema.
Karam Monomohan Singh was born on 27 December 1922 at Yumnam Leikai, Imphal. He was the son of Karam Toyaima Singh and Loukrakpam Ningol Karam Ongbi Dhabali Devi, and the fourth of their six children. He was educated at Bengali High School, Imphal, and was fluent in Hindi, Bengali, and English.
During the Second World War, he married Rajkumari Chamusana, daughter of Rajkumar Angousana, a scion of Maharaja Narasingh, from Sanakhwaiyaima Kollup. The couple had six daughters and two sons.
From an early stage, Karam Monomohan Singh demonstrated wide-ranging interests and an entrepreneurial spirit. He began his career in the timber trade, establishing himself as a successful contractor. Prior to the Second World War, he undertook contract work in remote areas such as Kangpokpi and the surrounding hill regions. A chance encounter with a British officer—whom he impressed with his courtesy—led to further contract opportunities.
During the war, he constructed a transit camp at Lamlai for displaced communities, including Chinese, Punjabi, Nepali, Madrasi, and Marwari populations repatriated from Burma (Myanmar). He was involved in the construction of highways, bridges, and other infrastructure projects, while also providing employment to economically disadvantaged workers.
His cultural engagements were equally diverse. He led a circus troupe, performing himself as an artist, and sponsored circus performances across Manipur. He operated businesses in Tamu (Burma) and later in Moreh, where he helped organize and develop a local market. His commercial activities subsequently shifted to Singjamei Keithel and later to Khawairamband Keithel, Imphal.
In the post–Second World War period, he joined the socialist movement advocating a just socio-economic order in Manipur, for which he was briefly imprisoned. After his release, he resumed his business ventures, including reopening timber trade operations and establishing a sawmill at Canchipur. He successfully initiated the export of dalchini (cinnamon), benefiting the livelihoods of poor communities. His enterprises expanded to include brick kilns, khapra and tile manufacturing, plywood production, and a pisciculture farm at Sekmaijin. He also developed a sugarcane farm at Sherou, Sugnu, producing molasses.
Karam Monomohan Singh played a seminal role in the growth of Manipuri cinema. In addition to producing Maipak – Son of Manipur (1971) and Matamgi Manipur (1972), he prepared documentaries on Dinku, the Asian boxing champion, the National Games at Imphal, and other cultural events. He also opened cinema halls at Moreh, Sugnu, Wangjing, and Canchipur, significantly expanding film exhibition infrastructure in the state. He took a strong interest in the revival of Meitei Mayek, using the script prominently in the title credits of Matamgi Manipur. A later celluloid film project, Shanagi Machu, based on the Sumang Lila play Sanagi Machu, remained unreleased.
He was a committed patron of education, donating to Dhabali High School, Sekmaijin, and Sika Higher Secondary School, Imphal. Notably, he voluntarily handed over his patta land and workshop at Canchipur to the authorities of Manipur University, facilitating the expansion of the university campus.
For his contribution to cinema, he received the President’s Award (1973) from the Government of India for Matamgi Manipur in the Regional Feature Film (Manipuri) category. He also received awards from the Government of Manipur for achieving the highest fish production through his pisciculture initiatives.

Matamgi Manipur, 1972 Collection
Matamgi Manipur is the first full-length feature film in Manipur, released in 1972. Matamgi Manipur means Contemporary Manipur. It was directed by Bengali film maker Deb Kumar Bose and produced by Karam Monomohan under the banner of K.T. (Karam Toyaima) Films Private Limited. Manipuri Cinema drew its resources from the Manipuri Theatre which has almost a century old tradition (Bidur 1997, 16). Matamgi Manipur was adapted from Arambam Samarendra’s theatrical play Tīrtha Yātrā. It was adapted into a screenplay by Deb Kumar Bose.
Premiering on April 9, 1972, this film achieved a historic milestone by winning the President’s Medal at the 20th National Film Festival of India in 1973.
The music was composed by Aribam Syam Sharma, and the director of photography was Sankar Banerjee. The screenplay was written by Deb Kumar Bose, while the dialogue was by Arambam Lokendra. The lyrics were written by Phulendra and Maharajkumari Binodini Devi, and the art direction was handled by Bijoy Bose.
The film is in black and white and stars Gurumayum Ravindra Sharma and Yengkhom Roma in the lead roles.
Maipak, Son of Manipur, 1997 Collection
As per records, the first Manipuri documentary film to be ever screened publicly was Maipak, Son of Manipur in 1971. The film was shown on November 9 that year at the Pratap Talkies. The film is 35mm black & white was produced by Karam Monohohan under the banner of K.T Films Private Limited, and it was directed by Debkumar Bose from Calcutta. The duration of the film is 10 minutes in both Meiteilon and English.
The film took up as its subject the achievement of Nongthombam Maipak Singh who clinched the prestigious title of Mr. India in 1970 and who also participated in the Mr. Universe contest organised by the International Federation of Body Builders at Paris in 1971. The film captured the extra ordinary physique of Manipur’s famous and handsome muscleman for posterity (Salam 1999, 28)
